The history of La Ferriera started in the middle of the 18th Century. The original use of La Ferriera, as the name suggests, was as an iron works, making agricultural equipment such as spades and ploughs that were used in the region.
In 1875 a wealthy family from Milan, took over La Ferriera. Iron making was stopped and they started to make flour. The flour making took place where the restaurant stands today. The grinding stone still stands in the restaurant, and the water channel underneath the restaurant can be seen through which the water flowed for making flour.
At the end of 1800 the building was sold to a town family. The new property started, in 1905, together with the flour working and the textile production. Inside special tanks silkworms were reared , for the silk production, but it lasted only 30 years.
To improve this type of production, the owner installed an electric turbine, and until 1930 it was able to give electricity to the entire town of Loro Ciuffenna. At the same time started a particular work: they produced lamp oil used for making soap. In 1969 all manufacturing was stopped.
After several years of abandonment, the Rampi family bought the construction, the actual owner and building contractors. In the course of one year they were able to restore the property and convert it into the actual Residence, paying particular attention to maintaining original characteristics.
